3:15pm. We (Mom, Dad, Roon, and I) rushed to the airport...we got there ear.y. After waiting a while, Scott & the rest showed up about 20 min later. We got checked in and met a couple of guys for Links magizine (sic, there's lots of sic). My family got together in the military reception room and prayed. Wen we came out- everyone was gone! But, we caught up with them at t he gate. We had an hour to kill, so we went to eat @ Cheers! (♫ where everybody knows your name ♫) Afterwards, wesaid good-bye and parted. I'm now sitting on an asile seat with 2 nice strangers. I'm so excited! Please Lord, let the rain let up!

Later. ..The flight was uneventful, except for a little "Get in your seat" sign while I was in the bathroom.

5:35pm Atlanta
We have landed in Atlanta and boarded KLM. Dawn & Jason almost missed the flight, but came on just in time. The KLM plane has an upstairs and is very unusual. I am sitting near the window, the man in the asile is named Jim,

Picture
he is from Atlanta and is traveling to the Ukraine to teach English. He is from Atlanta. We're about to take off.
PS 11:40 Amsterdam time.

2:50 AM (Amsterdam time) We've taken off! The clouds were so beautiful, like snow-white silk in some places; milk running over- whole milk, that is. We were given drinks, then dinner. Appitizer: smoked trout w/ diced tomatoes and capers. Main dish: cannolli w/ tomato cream sauce & parmasan cheese. Little salad, roll w/ butter, and strawberry moosse for dessert. Yum! I've been to the closet-size bathroom, removed my contacts w/Suzanne's Renew & have my ears filled w/ silence, thanks to dad's ear filters. The steward, Han, gave us blankets, and there''re great!  Opened Mom's card... wow she's great! Well, gotta sleep! g-nite!

5:05 AM Woke up & had OJ.

8-24-95 Over Iceland

Picture
Looked out the window & gasp! The curvature of the earth, softly rounded, illuminated by the sun below the horizon. AND... the Big Dipper in my face, perfect & straight - Incrediable! Going to try to sleep somemore.
5:30 AM Good morning, east Atlantic! And welcome to breakfast! First, a steaming cloth to bring you to full awakedness, then another cup of yet more-acidic OJ! Took my pill last nite & a tetra diese morgan. About to eat breakfast. Waiting.
7:50 AM We've had breakfast. Cheese danish, cut fruit & croissant w/ tea and real cream. I've just "experienced" the most beautiful sunrist. It was pink & blue like a nursery or a carnival incaven of cotton candy clouds. Incrediable! At first the sun showed up like a bright nerf ball, just a few miles from the plane. Then as it got

higher, pinks began showing through the fluffy clouds, still tinted blue from night. Then a few blissful minutes of Xanadu, cotton candy clouds rows & rows forever. So beautiful. Thank you God.

1:30 PM Ouch my feet hurt. What a looooonng day to far! We landed in Amsterdam and claimed our luggage, then we bought tickets... then we rode a cool train to Harleem, a WONDERFUL beautiful town. We came & walked 20 min to the hotel. We then went out in search of food. We found some neat places, La Place at the top of a department store, but we ended up @ McD's. I tried to order in Dutch. Ses 6 & "met" - with ice-> ice. It cost 9.95G We then walked to various shops around the main square with a church. I learned a bit of Dutch along the way.

Now we're waiting for the 2:00 meeting to begin. Boy, are we exhausted.
9:45 pm Had a bit of a rest before going to Amst ->Am. is all the weirdos of NYC mixed w/ a strange, harsh language. We went canal riding and saw many neat architectural stuff. Took many pictures. I owe her a roll of film. We then went and bought trinkets. Then we ate at a real Dutch restaurant. I had beef & potatoes & spinach & hot tea. Everything's kinda expensive - seeming over here. I miss the USA! Poor Melanie & Tamela had some mean man tell them to beware of their feet & that they were dumb. He then rant & raved at a neighboring table about Americans... At least I thought so. It was real weird. Then we came back and I had a weird time getting a hold of mom. I must have bad rotary fingers! Anyways, it was a good day.

8-25-95 Haarlem, Netherlands

6:40 AM We woke up at 5:00am this morning. Of course, in agreement w/ my prayers, I awoke bright-eyed & bushy-tailed without soreness. Thank you, God. We are about to get on the train to the airport, Schirpol. Scott is in a great mood, we're discussing children's shows.... Bert & Ernie are coming out of the closet this next season; I must write them & tell them what I think.

8-25-95 Potsdam, Germany

Ahhh... what a day this has been! Let's see... we got on the train to the Amsterdam airport, changed trains, and proceded to the Shirpol. Once there, we walked to Gate 33 and waited 30 min to get on. I slept the entire flight - OOOH! I forgot about breakfast this morning. We had all differend kinds of bread, w/ whole, whole milk, (I thought I had gotten 1/2 & 1/2), hot tea/weak coffee, cheeses and meats. The cream for the coffee was REAL very thick.  There was a box of sugar coated licorace (amnise?) seeds to put on a dried- English-muffin thing. WOW - was it good! Anyways, back to the flight - we were offered sandwiches: cheese meat, & butter on a hoagie or cheese & butter on some bumpy bread.
Wanting, of course, to try new things - I took the latter - it was very good! We got to the airport and took a bus to a parking lot in Berlin. Now I know why there is no speed limit on the autobahn... there's always a traffic jam! Anyways, we walked a while along the autobahn to a bus stop - seeing an interesting sight along the way... sunbathers! some topless, some just stark nekkid! Of course we giggled. We got to the bus stop and needed to pay DM 2,50 but we only had large bills, so I went to a wurst stand and ordered a Sprite in German & it worked. I then asked a stranger (in Ger) if I could take it on the bus. I could & did! After a long bus ride we got to the memorial church and was given a few hours to do what we wanted. Susanne & I ate at the Hard Rock Cafe for lunch -  then went to a mall. We met a lady there from Bulgaria who had studied at Berkeley and studied law in Berlin. She even lived in Atlanta for a few years! She bought Susanne and I coffees (I had a HUGE cafe au lait) & we talked for 1/2 an hour... boy was she neat! Afterwards we went on the bus back to the parking lot - got on our bus & went a LONG way to Potsdam.
Then we pulled our luggage up a hill & mile/mill 2 flights of stairs to the youth hostel. No one offered to help me - so I offered to help them! Afterwards, we went to eat dinner at a neat restaurant castle. The menu was in German, & almost no one there spoke English So I with my meager language skills, tried to help! I ordered some kind of fish off the menu. It came with a salad - which was mostly green & yellow peppers & raw tomatoes - But first I ordered an iced coffee - wow! It had real whipped cream & chocolate shavings. Later I ordered lemon & water - all of the water is seltzer b/c they still don't trust the tap to make limonade. It kinda worked. But when my meal came - the fish- WOW! It came with its head & tails & skin, even its eyes! But it was gutted! Wow, it was so gut! & for dessert I got chocolate ice cream w/ custard pudding & whipped cream - yum! We came back to the hostel, which is very clean - and had a team meeting. Then we went to bed. G'nite!

8-26-95 The Autobahn

4:45 pm Today we went & toured Berlin. I awoke this morning in Potsdam at the "gentle" beckoning of Jennifer Stripling's alarm clock. She, I, Nicky, April, and Melanie stayed in the youth hostel on the 3rd floor in 301. After waking up, I got dressed an drepacked my suitcase. Then I unbuttoned the sheet covers on the blanket & pillowcases. The night before, Jenny Deal & I took showers in the curtain-less shower stalls - what a bonding experience! Anyways, I dragged my bag to the bus - again with no male assistance, for it to be loaded. It was & we went to dinner, er... Früstück. There we had liverwurst, hamwurst, spreadable cheeses, fruit w/ tomatoes oatmeal w/ honey & milk, and , of course, Brot. And sliced wursts like baloney. The ham & liverwurst were potted meat, but the rest was sehr gut! Afterwards, we climbed into the bus, and took off.

Berlin

Picture
I slept. When I awoke, a tour guide was getting on our bus in Berlin. We went on a great tour. I took many pictures & bought a hair clip. Afterwards we stopped and ate in Berlin. Jason, Dawn, and I ate New York sandwiches but I had never seen them before. It was spinach & cheese in a bread that looked like a baked potato. Afterwards, we walked the mall. I found Dances with Wolves in a bookstore, but I had to have a club card to buy it. Right now, I am looking at a tower of a castle & I expect for Rapunzel to cast her hair out at any minute. So far we've passed sunflower fields, cabbage fields, corn fields, and fields lying fallow. We are on our way to Weimar. After we ate & the book situation, we found a grocery store. So many cheeses, meats, & wein! I bought candy and water. Afterwards we went for dessert, and then a walk in the cold rain. On the way to Weimar I slept until the rest stop where I bought sauerkraut - real German sauerkraut. Yum!  But I sit alone. I am lonely. I am the fat girl good for a laugh who makes stupid comments at things & is unwanted - BOY! What a self-pitiful moment.
Ok, it's passed. Whoa! Wanted to get that out a while! Berlin was neat - saw the wall, the Gestapo office was behind it, and across the street was the site of the Prussian government. All of the "old" buildings aren't because they were bombed to smithereens. They've all been rebuilt. St. Mary's Cathedral wasn't touched. It was so beautiful - my first cathedral.
Jewish stats. Before WWII, # of Jews in Berlin - 200,000. 100,000 left in the '30's and the other 100,000 were deported. # Jews in Berlin after the war when Soviets controlled - 200. # of Jews now in Berlin - 5,000. Downtown in Potsdam Square exists the largest construction site in Europe. The entire, huge place is being turned into a business district. It will be the largest such in the continent, compleated.  There is talk of moving the government to the Reichstag, since it had nothing to do with Nazi Germany except get burnt down by "the socialists". In this, Hitler raised enough hatred against the socialists, that he was able to get control of the government. The television tower (Pope's Revenge, although he didn't tell us that) is 365 meters high. Berlin is 4-8 times the size of Paris. Each bourough of Berlin (22) have a mayor. The arch of triumph was erected after the war w/ France in the 18th? century.
I'm getting sleepy.

8-26-2016 Luisa's haus Weimer, Deut.

Picture
12:20 AM We got to Weimar & unloaded the bus. Then we had a mini-orientation at the church. Then we paired off with our host families. My host family had a man and his son... "hmmmm" I thought. But he has 2 daughters. The youngest is Sophie (8). She reminds me very much of Ivy. She has short blond hair and crooked teeth. She is also a big Lion King fan. The next oldest is Fredich (II). He is a small boy, but very energetic. The oldest is Luisa - she attends the Goethe-Schule where I will be teaching. She is 12 years old. Her mom & dad work at the hospital - the hospital owns their house & so they can live here. It is very big & very nice. I had cut-up hot dogs in spiral pasta sauteed with ketchup for dinner - oh! and a salad and fruit salad for dessert - then we played tri-dominoes and now I'm going to bed. G'nite.

10:12 AM Bad girl, I did not write last nite. And what a good day it was! For breakfast we had bread, jam, cut up beef log, yougart, cornflakes, hot tea or coffee, liverwurste, cheese, cream cheese, buttermilk, and spreadable meat salad.  It was very good, except for the liverwurst, of which I tried none. Then we went to church. They have a picture of Mary in their bathroom, so I thought "Catholic". We wnt to a beautiful church. The people stood & sat. And we had communion w/ wine! I was the only one to leave lipstick on the chalise of Christ. When we left, I told the priest I was "aus die USA" and he told me he spoke English. So I thanked him and told him it :was my first Catholic service. Then I left. When I got in the car, I was told that they are not Catholic, but protestant. Talk about embarrassment. For mittingspause we had a zucchini sauteed thing with hamburger patties with onions & they were breaded and we had salad and chocolate ice cream for dessert. Then I went to meet with Melanie. Then orientation, during which I fell asleep. Then music rehearsal. The girl Ute, who looks to all like Sinead O'Conner, sins so nice oh, "The Loser takes All" that I cried & on "Wings" -  Oh! what a nice feeling! Then I came home and ate AGAIN. We had a woman over Mr. Eyles, boss. She was a missionary in Thailand for many years and the group she was with is American, so she speaks very good English. I taught Sofie, Henrietta (Sophie's friend), John (Friedrich's friend), Friedrich, and Luisa "Ring Around the Rosies." I had to translate and it was fun. We had bratwurste for dinner - with potato salad and bread. It was good. I was so tired I went to bed without writing.
- Today we awoke & ate a small breakfast. I got ready for school and Luisa and I walked. Menanie & I could not at first find our classes, but then we did. The first class was good, the second, bose.
We taught Thanksgiving today. Tomorrow we will teach GA geography. I went w/ Luisa to her Physics class and fell asleep. Then to her English class where Susie, Rob, & April were teaching. Then to lunch. They had for us pre-packaged potatoes & white stuff. Yuck! Luisa I came home and ate leftovers. Then I took a nap. Then OH - this morning, the kid's rabbit was dead, only one, but it was sad - after nap I went with Luisa around Weimar. We went to the Goethehaus, the Schillerhaus, I learned about Charlotte Stein, Goethe's girlfriend. I bought a copy of Faust. I bought a coat for dad, and game for Ivy, & a bottle of cognac for mom. I must buy chocolate for everyone else. Then we went through Goethe park. There's an old something there & Luisa told me they call it Sleeping Beauty's Schloss because it has roses climbing up the side. Then we came back and I ate bread and Luisa & I walked to the Goethe School. We practiced & I went back home. We had pizza and salad and juice. It was very good. And now it is late - I must go. Guten nacht!

Picture
9:35 Today was good. Not so much walking. I miss my family so schwer. This morning Luisa woke me up with "It is late" so immediately asked her what time it was. Promptly she said "6:45" OH!NO! I thought. I have 15 min to get ready & get there! Thankful I took a shower the other night, I hurried into the bathroom and quickly did the bathroom stuff. Then I hurriedly began to get ready, thinking. "Ohno! Melenie's going to kill me! Yikes!" My panick must have shown on my face & Luisa looked at me and said, "It will be OK" I then told her about my inner fear of making Melenie mad, and again she said - ever so imparitivly - "It will be OK." I wondered at how such a punctual people could react to me being so late. "Auch so!" I thought (a phrase I picked up) - School doesn't begin until 7:30! Laughingly, I told my friend this. It was funny. Then we had a fruhstuck and I walked with Kurt & Jenny Deal to school.

Whatever horrible thing Scott thinks of me, I think he has shared it with Kurt. He has been more & mehr curt with me. Today I was yelled at for not being at an un-announced meeting. Humph! Menenie and I taught the civil war today. We had maps and a crossword puzzle. It went well. The children did not know the words surrender, emancipation, Fort Sumter, and one Lee! I enjoyed today. Tomorrow we have, as Luisa says, "Die bose klasse" Oh well, Gott will see us through. Afterwards we ate in the cafeteria & had mystery meat meatloaf, w/ cabbage and, of course, kartoffles. Afterwards, Lusia, Anna, & I came home and they ate pizza & I had bread and butter. It was guyt. Then I tried to teach Sofie - Little Bunny FooFoo, but she did not want to learn - AUCH SO!

I forgot this morning I went with Luisa to Kunst We painted little bildes of the seasons in blocks of color. It was fun. Anyways, I also tried to teach Sophie a dance move, a _____. Then I went to sleep & then at 3:15 Anna, Luisa, & I went for ice cream, but it was closed! So we went the American-Reuthe-Goethe-Schule- basketball game. We lost. Then practice. Then we came home & no one was here, so I offered to the kids that I cook an American breakfast. They were all for the idea so I
got everything out & right before I start, their parents walk in. But, we were in luck. They went to a freundin house for his birthday so I cooked scrambled, fried, and poached eggs on Brotchen. They all liked it. Then I had to straighten out a fight between Fredrich und Sofie & I had to tickle Fredrich "bezahlen" "payment" for "fastnern" "touching" Sofie. Then, bed. But alas, they have not washed hteir teeth so I propose a zahnburste-fest & we all brushed our teeth together vs efore. Luisa made some qvatck - quack, but sounds like quotsch. It was good & not, she says, very fattening. There was a program on the TV made in the 30's or 40's. Wasn't Hitler in control then? Today I saw a car w/ yellow star of David on it. ??? Some things I don't understand. Good nite.

8-30-1995  Jugenherberge, Weimar

12:00 In the Jugenherberge. Susanne is trying to sleep. This morning I overslept and Kurt chewed me out. The Gothe-Schule had no school today. They had a birthday-fest for Goethe in the Weimar Halle. I cried on the way to the halle. Peteina is really interested in me; I think she might be interested in God. The show was boring, but there were very neat costumes. Later, I ate lunch with everyone; a shicken-sandwhich w/ brot & pea-green soup & hot dog thing. Then I went home. I slept, then Luisa, Fredrich & I went for Eis and then we went to the grocery store. We bought broccoli, chicken, and other stuff & candy. Later - I can't write.

F9-1-1995 Goethe-Schule - Weimar, Germany

Later, we got home and I began to cook, although it was 3:00. I had to thaw the chicken, in a big pot, on the stone, and then the broccoli. I had Lusia shread the entire block of Butterkase and I began in earnest. The chicken was whole, and after an hour and a half, it was thawed. I had to cut, - peel the potatoes. Then cut them up . Then boil them. Then butcher the chicken.. wait...BUTCHER the chicken. I have never butchered anything in my life. I had to cut off the poor things legs - PULL OUT the bag of stuff inside - the second one made a sucking noise  GROSS! and then I had to cut the meat off the bone - yuck! I was almost in tears when Mr. Vati came home. They were laughing at me, I think - that's ok - I'm laughing too. Later, Barbara & her husband (family friends) come over with their rugrats and ate with us. I made chicken tenders, broccoli w/ cheese and mashed potatoes. and COKE! They loved them all. There was nothing left! Everyone told me what a great cook I was. Of course, I basked in the much-needed, not-very-often-got praise. Later I helped Luisa with her English homework. Then I went to the Jugenherberge.

Mr. Vati took me there w/ Luisa, Fredrich, & Sofie in tow. He actually carried my bag up 4 flights of stairs. What a nice man. So I got here (Jugenherberge) and put my clothes up.

My roommates are: Beverly - a loud snorer, Susanne Wainwright, Tamela Whitehead, Kim Ledbetter, Lydia Hadaway, and Wendy Melvin. Other than Beverly's snoring, we're all well. Well, I'm not the only one who thinks Scott and Kurt are rather, well ... Curt. Everyone else thought Scott just didn't like them - we all never knew others felt the same way. So we had a support group type of thing going on. Someone told a story about how last year, Scott left a group of students on a train, and hurried out of it without telling them. I must admit I rather not fond of Kurt. His personality is so static. Oh well. Then I tried to write in my Journal, but Beverly's mouth never stops - she talks more than I do. There that finishes Wednesday.

Yesterday (Thursday) I woke up, got dressed and had breakfast. Then a cold, wet walk to the school, alone. I got here and there was this teacher, who wanted to have people with immigratients as ancestors come and talk. So, Shermaine and I and Jenni Deal went in and told about our ancestors. Shermaine and I might be related. We both have Cherokee blood. [I'm sick of speaking German!] We talked about racism and other topics. Afterward, the teacher - a Cuban w/ bad BO & breath <-> - asked us to go to another class. We had more people this time to speak - but they didn't. We talked about our generation, problems w/ America, what we thought of Germany BEFORE we came and now. They told us about what they thought of Americans "Very emotional" was very interesting. And so true.

I called Mom on Thursday and cried. I sure do miss them. We went to a mall yesterday. We rode a twinsty-bus. They had- at the mall - a huge store. It was like a SUPER-WAL-MART whatwith a grocery store and a Sears. We bought the little egg-thing covered with chocolate. Mine had a little dracula inside. It's so cute! We had to run to catch the bus back to the hostel, so we could get to the school and practice. At practice we sang and watched the drama. Then we had a sack lunch with a German for dinner. The girl who "chose" me (we had to go up front and stand, while a German picked up out) was Fronsina. She looks like Anja from Sweden. I ate a cheese sandwhich and a sandwhich with meat and butter. Potato chips, honey corn (graham) crackers, capri-sohne and an apple. it was different.

Then- home again where I wanted to read Deutch GWTW. But - everyone came in our room and sang. Meanwhile, there was a little mix up as to whether or not we were having a team meeting. At first yes, then no, then at the hostel, I overheard Susie saying "What time is the meeting?" to Kurt. So I thought there was a meeting @ 9:30. Then, I'm up on my bunk and Tara comes and tells me I need to pay Kurt - so I ask "why can't I pay later at the meeting?" She just shook her head and said something about just being a messanger. So later Kurt comes and gets the money and gives me change and has a problem and reads my calculator so I got it and then I got locked out and slept in the hallway until they came back from ice cream and I got inside - OH! I fell down the stairs - ouch! - and I went to bed.

M9-4-2016 Hostel, Weimar BDR

Breakfast: OOOH! Bad girl! So much to happen & I didn't write. There later on Thursday night a guy named Ky, who knows Kim came & wanted to take her out. She wasn't going alone, of course. So, mama Claire :-) got dressed and headed out. It wwas Ky, Ky, and Dennis (who looked JUST like Dennis from the business.) We went to a bar somewhere in town. It was a "typical" European bar, something like the American Werewolf in London-thing. There were musical instruments and sheet music on the walls. They played (they- the bar) American music. We sat down and talked about English & German. 2+2+2= 6 beers later (+7 waters & 1 nothing for us girls)
We ended talking American politics, socialism, and taxes -
Then I went to the hostel & slept.

9-5-95 Weimar

FRIDAY - We taught our last American class today. We played the cup game and talked about Georgia Geography. We had a good time.
Ok - today is the 5th and I can't remember the first. So I'm going to start with today and back up.
OK-  Today I woke up with Beverly mad at me. She thinks I talked to her last night and woke her up for no reason. She went to bed at 7 or 8 o'clock!! We came in at 10:30 from drama practice and we weren't allowed to turn on the light I - this is last night. Oh well- anyways. I messed up her watch clasp. Later
Breakfast. I'm eating. Yesterday (5th) I slept because I started my period. Then I took charge of my English camp. We did holidays, Valentine's Day. Christmas, 4th of July. Thanksgiving. Today we do Easter. I had Christmas, Jennifer Valentine's: Aaron - Thanksgiving - & Rob - 4th. The kids made things.
